Office Flooring: Carpet Tiles vs Vinyl for Hertfordshire Workplaces

22 February 2026|5 min read

Carpet tiles and luxury vinyl tiles dominate the office flooring market, but which is right for your space? We compare performance, cost, and maintenance for Hertfordshire offices.

The debate between carpet tiles and luxury vinyl tiles for office flooring is one we encounter on almost every commercial project across Hertfordshire. Both materials have distinct advantages, and the right choice depends on your building's use, acoustic requirements, and maintenance capacity.

Carpet tiles, particularly those from Interface and Forbo, offer superior acoustic properties. They absorb impact sound and reduce ambient noise in open-plan offices where multiple conversations occur simultaneously. The modular format also allows damaged or stained tiles to be lifted and replaced individually, extending the floor's lifespan.

Interface's GlasBac and CushionBac Renew backings provide additional benefits. CushionBac adds underfoot comfort and further acoustic absorption, while GlasBac offers excellent dimensional stability that prevents tile lifting or shrinkage. These properties are particularly valuable in older Hertfordshire office buildings where subfloor conditions may be variable.

Luxury vinyl tiles from Polyflor and Forbo offer different advantages. LVT is impervious to liquid spills, making it ideal for breakout areas, kitchens, and hot-desking environments where coffee and food are present. The wear layer, measured in millimetres, determines durability. For heavy commercial offices, we recommend 0.55mm or above.

Maintenance requirements differ significantly. Carpet tiles need regular vacuuming and periodic deep extraction cleaning. LVT requires only damp mopping and occasional polishing. For businesses in Ware, Hatfield, and Welwyn Garden City with limited cleaning budgets, LVT can reduce lifetime maintenance costs by 30 to 40 percent.
